DRASS: In a move aimed at expanding military tourism and encouraging community participation, the Indian Army, in collaboration with the Civil Administration, Drass, successfully conducted the Tiger Hill Expedition 2026, marking the first organised expedition to the historic battlefield since Drass attained the status of a district headquarters.

The expedition, held on July 17, brought participants to one of the most iconic battlefields of the 1999 Kargil War, offering them an opportunity to explore the site’s historical importance while experiencing the region’s rugged terrain and natural landscape. The initiative forms part of efforts to preserve the legacy of Tiger Hill and position Drass as a prominent destination for heritage and military tourism.

A defining feature of the expedition was the participation of six trained tour and trek guides from Government Degree College, Drass, who assisted in managing the event. Their involvement reflected the administration’s focus on developing local human resources, generating sustainable livelihood opportunities and integrating the community into the region’s expanding tourism ecosystem.

Officials said the expedition demonstrated the growing synergy between the Indian Army and the civil administration in promoting responsible tourism while safeguarding the historical character of Tiger Hill, one of the most enduring symbols of India’s victory during the Kargil conflict.

The initiative is also expected to strengthen Drass’ profile as a destination that offers a blend of military history, adventure tourism and community-driven experiences, while creating avenues for local youth to participate in the tourism sector through skill development and guided trekking initiatives.

The successful conduct of the expedition underscores continuing efforts to preserve the Kargil War heritage while leveraging the region’s historical and geographical assets to promote sustainable tourism and wider public engagement.
