LEH: Students of Eliezer Joldan Memorial (EJM) College, Leh, have harvested their first batch of oyster mushrooms for 2026, gaining hands-on experience in cultivation, packaging, marketing and sales as part of a practical learning initiative.

The entire production cycle, from preparation and cultivation to harvesting, packaging and marketing, was undertaken by the students under the guidance of the college’s Mushroom Growing Instructor.

Following the harvest, the students sold the freshly harvested mushrooms within the college campus, allowing them to apply their classroom learning to a real-world commercial activity.

The exercise gave students practical exposure to pricing, marketing, customer interaction and sales, while introducing them to the basic processes involved in taking an agricultural product from cultivation to the market.

The initiative is aimed at encouraging an entrepreneurial mindset among students and familiarising them with mushroom cultivation as a potential avenue for self-employment and income generation.

The first harvest is part of EJM College’s efforts to promote skill-based and practical learning, enabling students to acquire vocational experience alongside their academic education.

The activity also provided students an opportunity to understand the commercial aspects of mushroom cultivation, from production planning and post-harvest handling to direct marketing and customer engagement.
