LEH: The Indian Army on Saturday organised a series of environmental awareness and cleanliness campaigns across Ladakh to mark International Plastic Bag Free Day, encouraging communities to reduce dependence on single-use plastics while promoting collective efforts to safeguard the region’s fragile Himalayan ecosystem.

At Tsaga Village, the Army conducted an awareness programme highlighting the environmental hazards posed by single-use plastics and urging residents to adopt sustainable alternatives in their daily lives. The campaign focused on fostering responsible waste management practices and encouraging environmentally conscious behaviour among the local population.

In a parallel initiative, the Fire and Fury Corps organised a community-led cleanliness and awareness drive at Maan Village along the Pangong–Tangtse Road, where local residents and school children joined Army personnel in collecting plastic waste from public spaces. The participants also took part in awareness activities promoting the responsible use and disposal of plastic to minimise environmental degradation in the ecologically sensitive region.

The twin initiatives brought together the Indian Army, local communities and students in a coordinated effort to address plastic pollution through public participation and environmental awareness. The programmes underscored the importance of community involvement in preserving Ladakh’s unique landscape, which remains vulnerable to the adverse effects of non-biodegradable waste.

According to the organisers, the campaigns reflected a shared commitment to environmental conservation while reinforcing the longstanding relationship between the Indian Army and the people of Ladakh through collaborative efforts aimed at building a cleaner and greener future.
