KARGIL: His Eminence the Second Drukpa Thuksey Rinpochey has laid the foundation stone for the construction of the Kargil Gonpa at Kurbathang, marking the commencement of a religious and cultural project for the Buddhist community in Kargil district.

The foundation-laying ceremony was held on the auspicious occasion of Tsergyat of the fifth month of the Tibetan calendar and witnessed the participation of religious leaders, public representatives and members of the Buddhist community from across the district.

Among those present were Member of Parliament from Ladakh Mohd Hanifa Jan, Executive Councillor, LAHDC Kargil, Phuntsok Tashi, President of the Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA) Chering Dorjay, representatives of the Kargil Democratic Alliance, office-bearers of the Ladakh Buddhist Association and members of its women and youth wings.

The proposed Gonpa is expected to serve as an important centre for religious, cultural and community activities, reflecting the aspirations of the Buddhist population in Kargil and adjoining areas.

On the occasion, representatives of the Ladakh Buddhist Association expressed gratitude to the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Kargil, and individuals who have contributed towards the project. They acknowledged the support extended for the construction initiative and appealed to well-wishers and donors to continue their assistance in the coming phases of development.

The ceremony concluded with prayers and expressions of hope that the project would contribute to the preservation and promotion of the region’s rich Buddhist heritage while serving future generations of the community.
