NEW DELHI: Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) General N.S. Raja Subramani on Monday called for a fundamental shift in India’s military preparedness, asserting that future conflicts will increasingly be shaped by artificial intelligence, cyber capabilities, autonomous systems and space-based technologies rather than conventional battlefield doctrines.
Delivering the keynote address at the inauguration of the Fourth Edition of the Tri-Services Future Warfare Course at the Manekshaw Centre, the CDS said the rapidly evolving security environment demands that the Armed Forces anticipate emerging threats and develop the capability to operate seamlessly across multiple domains.
Emphasising that technological superiority will play a decisive role in future conflicts, General Raja Subramani highlighted the growing influence of artificial intelligence, cyber warfare, autonomous platforms, information warfare, space technologies and data-driven decision-making on modern military operations. He stressed that preparedness for future battlefields would depend not only on technological adaptation but also on the ability to integrate these capabilities into operational planning.
Calling for deeper integration among the Army, Navy and Air Force, the CDS underlined the importance of strengthening jointness while expanding collaboration with industry, academia and the research ecosystem to accelerate innovation and enhance India’s defence preparedness.
Organised by the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS), the four-week course has brought together officers from the three Services alongside representatives from government departments, industry, academic institutions and strategic organisations to deliberate on the emerging dimensions of warfare.
The curriculum will focus on evolving geopolitical challenges, disruptive technologies, cognitive and cyber warfare, multi-domain operations, scenario planning and technology-enabled military strategies, reflecting the Armed Forces’ growing emphasis on preparing commanders for an increasingly complex security landscape.
The course is part of the Integrated Defence Staff’s continuing effort to strengthen professional military education and develop strategic leadership capable of responding to the rapidly changing nature of warfare in the twenty-first century.
