Leh: Against the stunning backdrop of Pangong Lake, hundreds of participants from India and abroad gathered in eastern Ladakh for a unique celebration of yoga, meditation and cultural harmony as part of the ongoing International Festival of Yoga and Meditation (IFYM) 2026.

Organised by the Mahabodhi International Meditation Centre (MIMC), the event brought together officers and jawans of the Indian Army, civil administration officials, local residents, students and international delegates, transforming the shores of the iconic lake into a symbol of peace, unity and spiritual well-being.

Addressing the gathering, MIMC founder Ven. Bhikkhu Sanghasena described Yoga, Meditation, Karuna (Compassion), Ahimsa (Non-Violence) and the philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam as India’s greatest gifts to humanity. Stressing the universal nature of yogic practices, he said they transcend religion and belief systems and serve as powerful tools for physical and mental well-being.

Highlighting the significance of yoga for troops stationed in Ladakh’s harsh high-altitude environment, he noted that the discipline enhances physical fitness, emotional balance and resilience while helping manage stress. He also expressed gratitude to the Fire and Fury Corps of the Indian Army for facilitating the programme.

A practical yoga session led by Swami Vachananda, along with instructors from The Yoga Institute, Mumbai, saw enthusiastic participation amid one of the Himalayas’ most picturesque settings.

One of the highlights of the event was a series of vibrant cultural performances by students of Mahabodhi Residential School. Besides an elaborate yoga demonstration, the students presented a patriotic dance dedicated to the Indian Army and a captivating Black-Necked Crane dance celebrating the ecological heritage of the Changthang region and Pangong wetlands.

Adding colour to the occasion, members of Man Merak village showcased traditional folk dances reflecting the rich cultural traditions of Changthang, while renowned Ladakhi singer Phuntsog Ladakhi enthralled the audience with a musical performance.

Senior Army officers and civil administration officials, including Col. Amit Kumar Chobey, Commanding Officer of 17 Rajput, SP Changthang Zaheer Abbas and representatives of local communities attended the programme. Commemorative mementos of IFYM 2026 were presented to Army officers, civil officials and community representatives in recognition of their support.

The event concluded with a renewed commitment towards promoting yoga, meditation, environmental awareness and cultural preservation, with Pangong Lake serving as a fitting venue for a message of harmony between humanity, nature and the inner self.
