LEH: Andrew Califf, a Fulbright-Nehru Researcher from the United States for 2026-27, has become the first foreign scholar to be affiliated with the University of Ladakh, where he will undertake archaeological research on the region’s prehistoric past.
Califf met University of Ladakh Vice-Chancellor Prof Saket Kushwaha on Thursday, accompanied by his wife, and discussed his research project titled “Developing Orological Survey Strategies to Map Lithics and Explore Ladakh’s Prehistory.”
He will conduct the research under the academic supervision of Dr Phunstog Angmo of the Department of History. His work will focus on developing survey strategies to map lithic remains and explore aspects of Ladakh’s prehistory.
During the meeting, Kushwaha briefed Califf on the University’s academic infrastructure and the facilities available to researchers on campus. Califf, in turn, gave the Vice-Chancellor an overview of his proposed research.
The meeting was also attended by Dean Research Dr Sonam Joldan and Dr Phunstog Angmo.
Califf’s affiliation with the University marks its first engagement with a foreign scholar and brings an international research component to ongoing academic work on Ladakh’s archaeology and prehistoric heritage.
