LEH: The Department of Social Work, University of Ladakh, Leh Campus, on Monday organised a special lecture on mental health and psychosocial well-being, with experts underlining the role of social workers in prevention, counselling, rehabilitation and community-based support.

The lecture, titled “Mental Health and Psychosocial Well-Being: Understanding Mental Health Issues and the Role of Social Workers,” focused on common mental health concerns, healthy coping mechanisms, stress management and the need to seek professional support when required.

The session was delivered by Dr Remesh Krishnan P., Psychiatric Social Worker, Kerala State Mental Health Authority, and Assistant Professor, Bharata Mata School of Social Work, Bharata Mata College (Autonomous), Kochi, Kerala.

Dr Krishnan explained the role of social workers in mental health promotion and prevention, psychosocial assessment, counselling, emotional support, family interventions, community-based services, rehabilitation, advocacy, referrals and coordination with other professionals.

He stressed the need for a multidisciplinary and person-centred approach to addressing mental health concerns, placing individual needs and psychosocial circumstances at the centre of support and intervention.

The programme began with a welcome address by Stanzin Nurboo, who underlined the importance of mental health awareness and the need to foster a supportive environment for individuals experiencing mental health challenges.

An interactive discussion and question-and-answer session followed the lecture, allowing students and other participants to raise queries concerning mental health and social work practice.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Nargis Banoo, Coordinator, Department of Social Work. She expressed gratitude to the resource person, faculty members, students, organisers and participants for their contributions.

The department also acknowledged the support of Vice-Chancellor Prof Saket Kushwaha and the University authorities in organising the programme.
