LEH: In a major step towards restoring peace and social harmony in Ladakh following the September 24 violence in Leh last year, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has approved the withdrawal of criminal cases against 10 more individuals allegedly linked to the incident.
Announcing the decision, the LG said the approval had been granted following a recommendation by Ladakh Police to withdraw the cases against the 10 individuals. He described the move as part of the administration’s continued commitment to fostering unity, healing and lasting peace in the Union Territory.
In August this year, the administration announced that closure reports would be filed in cases against 25 people. Subsequently, on September 23, the LG approved the withdrawal of cases against 20 individuals, including four deceased victims.
The decision is expected to provide relief to the individuals concerned, allowing them to move forward with their lives and careers without the burden of prolonged criminal litigation, subject to the applicable legal process.
“In our continued commitment to fostering unity, healing, and lasting peace in Ladakh, I have approved the withdrawal of criminal cases against 10 individuals, linked to the unfortunate violence that erupted in Leh on September 24 last year,” Saxena said in a post on X.
Emphasising the broader significance of the decision, the LG said the move prioritised justice, healing and recovery over prolonged litigation and would help strengthen peace, unity and social harmony across the region.
He also expressed gratitude to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his “sympathetic and sensitive approach” towards matters concerning the victims and their families.
The September 24 violence had marked a serious law-and-order challenge in Leh, leaving the region grappling with its social and political repercussions. The subsequent legal proceedings against those allegedly linked to the incident became an important aspect of the developments that followed.
The latest decision signals an effort by the administration to facilitate reconciliation and enable the individuals covered by the approval to resume their lives, while underlining the importance of restoring confidence and maintaining communal harmony in the region.
The approval comes against the backdrop of the administration’s stated emphasis on peace and reconciliation in Ladakh, where the September 24 incident had heightened tensions and underscored the need for sustained efforts to restore normalcy.
