LEH: Assuring residents of a lasting solution to persistent water shortages in Stakmo village, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena on Wednesday announced that a dedicated water body would be developed under Project Him Sarovar to secure long-term water availability for the high-altitude settlement.
The assurance came during the Lieutenant Governor’s visit to Stakmo village in Leh district following representations from local residents regarding acute water scarcity despite the presence of abundant glacial meltwater in the surrounding region.
Interacting with villagers, Saxena acknowledged the challenges faced by the community and said the proposed intervention under Project Him Sarovar would focus on creating sustainable water storage infrastructure capable of addressing the village’s long-standing water needs.
Situated at an altitude of more than 13,000 feet, Stakmo has continued to grapple with limited access to water, affecting daily life and local livelihoods. The Lieutenant Governor said the administration was committed to finding durable and practical solutions for remote habitations facing similar challenges.
To facilitate early implementation, Saxena directed the concerned departments and technical agencies to examine all engineering and feasibility aspects of the project and expedite its execution.
Highlighting the importance of climate-resilient infrastructure, he stressed the need for sustainable and community-oriented measures to strengthen water security in vulnerable high-altitude regions of Ladakh.
The visit assumes importance against the backdrop of growing concerns over water availability in several villages across the Union Territory, where changing climatic conditions and increasing demand have intensified pressure on traditional water sources.
Officials said the administration is focusing on long-term conservation, storage and resource management initiatives to safeguard livelihoods and improve living conditions in remote areas, with Project Him Sarovar emerging as a central component of these efforts.
