Our focus remains on sustainable, responsible and community-based tourism that generates livelihoods, fosters entrepreneurship and ensures benefits reach local communities,” says LG
Kargil: Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena on Wednesday underscored the importance of sustainable, responsible and community-based tourism for Ladakh’s future as he virtually inaugurated the 2nd Suru Summer Festival 2026, describing the event as a rapidly emerging landmark on the Union Territory’s tourism calendar.
The inaugural ceremony was attended by CEC Kargil Dr Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, Executive Councillors Altaf Hussain and Aga Syed Ali, Deputy Commissioner Kargil Rakesh Kumar, SSP Kargil Nitin Yadav, district officers, artists, students and a large number of local residents.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony virtually, the Lieutenant Governor said the festival, organised amid the breathtaking landscapes of Suru Valley, reflects Ladakh’s unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness and traditional hospitality. He said the event provides a vibrant platform to showcase Ladakh’s folk traditions, music, cuisine, handicrafts, adventure activities and local heritage before visitors from across the country and abroad.
LG Saxena emphasised that festivals such as the Suru Summer Festival are not merely cultural celebrations but important instruments for economic development and community empowerment. He said immersive tourism experiences centred on local culture and nature create livelihood opportunities for artisans, homestay owners, guides, transporters, youth and entrepreneurs, ensuring that tourism growth directly benefits local communities.
“Our focus remains on sustainable, responsible and community-based tourism that generates livelihoods, fosters entrepreneurship and ensures that the benefits reach local communities,” the Lieutenant Governor said.
He stressed that strengthening Ladakh’s tourism ecosystem would help build a future in which culture, nature and economic growth flourish together. The LG underlined that tourism in a fragile Himalayan region like Ladakh must be developed in a manner that preserves ecological balance while creating long-term opportunities for the people.
The Suru Summer Festival, now in its second edition, is increasingly emerging as an important platform for promoting Kargil’s tourism potential and diversifying Ladakh’s visitor destinations beyond conventional circuits. The festival highlights the region’s rich cultural heritage and adventure tourism opportunities through cultural performances, folk music, local cuisine, traditional handicrafts, exhibitions and a range of outdoor activities.
As part of the festival, adventure events including a cycle rally from the University of Ladakh campus to Ashina, paragliding at Tsunchay Doks in Namsuru Thang, river rafting from Kochik Bridge to Damsna and rock climbing near Karpo Khar Castle were organised, showcasing Suru Valley’s immense potential as an adventure tourism destination.
Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor, LAHDC Kargil, Dr Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, while addressing the gathering, called for coordinated efforts by government departments, local entrepreneurs, media organisations and social media influencers to promote Kargil tourism at the national and international level. He said the festival had been conceived to showcase Suru Valley’s exceptional natural beauty, cultural heritage and adventure tourism potential while opening new livelihood avenues for local communities.
Secretary Tourism, UT Ladakh, Sanjit Rodrigues, highlighted Suru Valley’s potential to emerge as a leading destination for adventure, cultural and sustainable tourism. He informed that efforts were underway to include the Suru Festival among Ladakh’s nine State-level festivals, which would provide greater visibility to the event and help establish it as a major annual tourism attraction.
The festival brought together local communities, artists, tourism stakeholders, media persons, social media influencers and visitors, reinforcing the message that tourism development in Ladakh must be rooted in local participation and environmental responsibility.
LG Saxena’s emphasis on community-led tourism aligns with Ladakh’s broader vision of promoting economic growth through local enterprise while preserving the region’s cultural identity and fragile mountain ecology. The Suru Summer Festival, he noted, exemplifies how culture, adventure and sustainable development can work together to create enduring benefits for people living in remote Himalayan regions.
With the Suru Summer Festival steadily gaining prominence, the event is expected to play an increasingly important role in positioning Kargil and Suru Valley as key destinations on Ladakh’s tourism map while ensuring that tourism growth remains inclusive, sustainable and community-oriented.
