NYOMA: An awareness camp on the prohibition of identified single-use plastic (SUP) items was conducted at Nyoma Main Market, with officials educating shopkeepers and business owners about the enforcement of the government’s ban on specified plastic products and the need to adopt environmentally sustainable practices.

During the programme, participants were briefed on the environmental hazards associated with single-use plastics and informed about the categories of plastic items prohibited under the latest government regulations. Officials also explained the legal provisions governing the ban, including penalties for the use, storage, sale and distribution of restricted plastic products.

The awareness initiative focused on encouraging traders and business establishments to shift towards eco-friendly alternatives and support efforts aimed at maintaining cleanliness and reducing plastic pollution in the region.

Officials stressed that public cooperation remains crucial for the successful implementation of the ban and for protecting the fragile environment of Ladakh from the growing threat of plastic waste.

Participants at the camp expressed their commitment to adhering to the government directives and pledged to contribute towards environmental conservation through responsible waste management and sustainable business practices.

The programme concluded with a collective appeal for greater community participation in building a cleaner, greener and plastic-free Nyoma.
