KARGIL: The Suru River Safayi Abhiyan continued across Sankoo Sub-Division on Thursday, with coordinated cleanliness drives conducted along multiple stretches of the river as part of an ongoing campaign to promote environmental conservation and preserve the river’s ecological health.
Held under the directions of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Sankoo, the second day of the campaign covered the river stretch from Sankoo to Lankerchey, where officials and volunteers carried out waste removal and awareness activities aimed at encouraging community participation in protecting the river ecosystem.
The drive was led by the Block Development Office (BDO), Sankoo, with active participation from the Agriculture Department, Sheep Husbandry Department, Youth Services and Sports Department, Baseej-e-Baqiyatullah Anjuman Sahib Zaman Sankoo, and officials and field staff of the BDO, including Mukhiya Sevikas, Panchayat Secretaries, Work Supervisors and RGSA functionaries.
Participants removed waste accumulated along the riverbanks while simultaneously sensitising local residents about the importance of maintaining cleanliness and safeguarding the environment. Officials said the activities were documented through geo-tagged photographs to monitor the progress of the campaign.
Simultaneously, another cleanliness drive was undertaken along the Damsna–Panikhar stretch of the Suru River, drawing participation from officials and staff of several departments. The Health Department, Panikhar, also joined the campaign and contributed to the clean-up operation.
Officials said the coordinated drives across multiple locations reflected a collective commitment by government departments, community organisations and volunteers to strengthen environmental stewardship and promote sustained public participation in protecting the Suru River.
The ongoing campaign forms part of broader efforts to improve sanitation, raise environmental awareness and encourage community-led conservation of one of Kargil district’s major river systems.
