LEH: The Department of Psychology at the University of Ladakh organised a three-day educational tour to Leh from October 2 to 4, giving students an opportunity to explore Himalayan healing traditions and examine their links with modern psychological concepts.

A major part of the tour was a visit to the National Institute of Sowa-Rigpa (NISR), Leh, where students were introduced to traditional Himalayan approaches to health and well-being. The visit sought to connect Western psychological theories with Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS), including an examination of how the traditional concept of Tri-Dosha relates to contemporary ideas of emotion regulation, perception and mental wellness.

The department said the exposure visit included observational sessions and field interactions aimed at helping students understand culturally rooted approaches to mental health. It also encouraged them to explore how indigenous Himalayan knowledge could inform future research in transcultural psychology.

The tour was led by Department Head K. S. Raghav, accompanied by faculty members Sonam Wangmo and Kaniz Fatimah. The programme was organised with the support of University of Ladakh Vice-Chancellor Prof. Saket Kushwaha and Kargil Campus In-Charge Dr. Mehboob Ali. The initiative aimed to broaden students’ understanding of mental health frameworks beyond conventional Western theories and encourage academic inquiry into the relationship between traditional knowledge and contemporary scientific research.
