LEH: The Indian Army’s Siachen Chakors on Friday marked World Horse Day by organising an awareness programme for students of Army Goodwill School, Pratap Pur, highlighting the heritage, operational role and conservation of the endangered Zanskari Pony, an indigenous Himalayan horse breed closely associated with Ladakh’s high-altitude landscape.
The programme focused on familiarising students with the historical importance of the Zanskari Pony and its continued contribution to military logistics in the challenging terrain of the Siachen Glacier, where the breed’s endurance and adaptability have made it an integral part of transportation and supply operations.
During the interaction, Army personnel outlined ongoing efforts to conserve and revive the indigenous breed, emphasising the need to preserve its genetic lineage and cultural significance. The students were briefed on the Army’s initiatives aimed at safeguarding the Zanskari Pony while promoting awareness about its role in the region’s ecological and historical heritage.
The awareness session also highlighted the broader importance of protecting indigenous animal breeds that are uniquely adapted to the harsh Himalayan environment. Officials said encouraging awareness among younger generations is essential for ensuring the long-term conservation of such native species.
The programme formed part of the Army’s World Horse Day observance and reflected its continuing efforts to combine operational responsibilities with initiatives promoting environmental stewardship, biodiversity conservation and the preservation of Ladakh’s unique cultural heritage.
