LEH: Extending support to the Union Territory Administration’s campaign against plastic pollution, major airlines operating flights to Ladakh have started making in-flight announcements urging passengers to comply with the ban on single-use plastics and refrain from littering while visiting the high-altitude region.
The initiative follows the strict prohibition on the use of single-use plastics and littering across the Union Territory, ordered by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena as part of the administration’s broader efforts to preserve Ladakh’s fragile environment.
According to the Ladakh Administration, the announcements are aimed at sensitising tourists even before they arrive in the Union Territory, encouraging them to travel responsibly and minimise their environmental footprint. Passengers are being advised to avoid carrying single-use plastic items into Ladakh and to dispose of any plastic waste only in designated bins.
The move is expected to strengthen public awareness by taking Ladakh’s message of ecological responsibility directly to visitors during their journey. By using in-flight announcements, airlines are helping amplify the administration’s appeal for collective action against plastic pollution and promoting responsible tourism practices.
The collaboration with airlines marks an important step in extending environmental awareness beyond the ground, ensuring that travellers are informed of the regulations before entering the ecologically sensitive Himalayan region. The campaign also seeks to foster greater civic responsibility among tourists, whose numbers have steadily increased in recent years.
Ladakh’s cold desert ecosystem is particularly vulnerable to plastic waste due to its harsh climatic conditions, sparse vegetation and limited waste-processing capacity. Environmentalists have repeatedly cautioned that non-biodegradable litter poses a long-term threat to the region’s rivers, wildlife and pristine landscapes.
The administration has been intensifying measures to curb plastic pollution through stricter enforcement, awareness campaigns and community participation. The latest partnership with airlines is expected to further reinforce these efforts by making environmental stewardship an integral part of the travel experience.
Reiterating its commitment to safeguarding Ladakh’s unique natural heritage, the administration said protecting the Union Territory’s pristine environment requires the active participation of residents, visitors, businesses and transport operators alike. Officials expressed hope that the in-flight awareness campaign would encourage greater compliance with the plastic ban and contribute to preserving Ladakh’s delicate ecosystem for future generations.
