KHALTSE: The Sub-Divisional Administration of Liker has intensified enforcement of the Union Territory Administration’s ban on single-use plastic (SUP) and littering items through a series of awareness campaigns and surprise inspections across major settlements and tourist destinations in the sub-division.
The drive, conducted under the supervision of Sub-Divisional Magistrate Liker, Gurmeet Namgial, focused on sensitising commercial establishments and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations aimed at reducing plastic waste and improving public cleanliness.
As part of the initiative, a surprise inspection and awareness campaign was carried out in Saspol under the supervision of Tehsildar Saspol, Tanveer Ahmad. During the exercise, restaurant owners, shopkeepers and employees were briefed on the environmental consequences of plastic pollution, penalties for violations and their responsibilities in maintaining clean public spaces.
Officials directed business establishments to install dustbins outside their premises and cautioned against the disposal of waste in drains, open spaces and other unauthorised locations.
The administration also used the campaign to promote behavioural change among stakeholders, emphasising the need for collective action to reduce plastic consumption and curb littering.
Following the Saspol drive, similar inspection and sensitisation programmes were conducted in Alchi, Uleytokpo, Hemischu and Nurla, extending the administration’s outreach to key population centres and tourist destinations across the sub-division.
Officials said the campaign forms part of a broader effort to ensure effective implementation of the UT-wide ban on single-use plastic and littering items. The initiative seeks to strengthen public awareness, improve waste management practices and protect the ecological integrity of the region, particularly in areas that witness substantial tourist footfall.
The administration reiterated its commitment to continuing enforcement and awareness activities to promote cleaner and environmentally responsible communities across Sub-Division Liker.
