KHALTSI: Stressing the need for coordinated and time-bound action to reduce road accidents, Deputy Commissioner, Sham, Smt. Kunzes Angmo (JKAS), on Friday directed all stakeholder departments to expedite pending highway safety works, identify accident-prone stretches, remove encroachments along National Highway-1 (NH-1), and strengthen traffic management across the district.

The directions were issued during a meeting of the District Highway Safety Task Force convened at the Conference Hall of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Khaltsi to review compliance with decisions taken during the previous meeting held on June 6.

Reviewing the status of action taken by the concerned departments, the Deputy Commissioner assessed the progress of highway safety initiatives and underscored the need for sustained inter-departmental coordination to ensure their timely implementation. She said regular monitoring and coordinated execution were essential to improving road safety standards and safeguarding commuters travelling through the district.

Kunzes Angmo instructed the departments to prioritise the identification of vulnerable and accident-prone locations, strengthen road infrastructure wherever required, and clear illegal constructions and encroachments along the NH-1 corridor to facilitate safer movement of traffic. She also called for enhanced traffic management measures to minimise accident risks and improve overall road discipline.

The Deputy Commissioner further directed the executing agencies to accelerate the completion of pending works and ensure that safety interventions are implemented without delay, emphasising that preventive measures remain central to reducing accidents on the district’s highway network.

The meeting was attended by SDM Khaltsi Mohd. Sharif, SDM Likir Gurmet Namgail, Divisional Fire Officer, Leh, David Zangpo, the Block Medical Officer, Khaltsi, Assistant Engineer (Civil), GREF, Omkar Nath, Assistant Executive Engineer, Border Roads Organisation, Assistant Executive Engineer, Public Works (Roads and Buildings), Khaltsi, and a Sub Inspector from the Police Department.

The meeting concluded with participating departments reaffirming their commitment to implementing the decisions in close coordination and advancing measures aimed at improving highway safety and ensuring safer travel across Sham district.
