Workers propose Gurmet Dorjay as District Prez, Tsering Tondan as WP; raise Sept 24 violence.

LEH: The Congress has begun its organisational exercise in the newly established Changthang district, with an AICC team led by Ladakh observer Keshav Chand Yadav holding consultations with party workers and residents across the region to seek views on strengthening the party’s organisational structure.

The team visited Durbuk, Rupsho, Nyoma and Chumathang as part of the Sangathan Srijan Abhiyaan (SSA) launched by the Indian National Congress in Ladakh.

Yadav was accompanied by PYC Vice President Tundup Nurbu Cheeta, former Councillor Thupstan Angchuk and Retired Honorary Captain Tsering Tondan during the tour.

During interactions with party workers and members of the Changthang community, Gurmet Dorjay was proposed for the post of President of the Changthang District Congress, while Retired Honorary Captain Tsering Tondan was proposed as Working President.

The consultations also brought the September 24 violence into focus, with residents urging the visiting Congress leadership to adopt a firm position on the incident. The press statement said the violence resulted in the deaths of four youths and injuries to dozens of others from AK-47 fire.

Residents placed their concerns before the visiting team during the interactions, seeking the party’s position on the incident and its aftermath.

The Changthang tour forms part of the Congress’s wider organisational exercise under the Sangathan Srijan Abhiyaan, through which the party is consulting workers and local communities in newly established districts.

The consultations are expected to inform the Congress’s organisational restructuring in Changthang, including the selection of leadership for the proposed district unit.

The exercise also provides the party with an opportunity to assess its organisational presence at the grassroots level and gather feedback from workers and residents before finalising the structure of its Changthang unit.
