LEH: The 13th Battalion of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) conducted an awareness and emergency response drill at EJM College, Leh, on Monday, familiarising students and staff with basic disaster preparedness and rescue techniques.
The session was led by Mohammad Shafiq, Deputy Commandant and Shaurya Chakra awardee, and focused on the steps to be taken during different emergency situations, including rescue operations, personal safety and coordinated response.
The programme sought to equip students and staff with practical knowledge of disaster preparedness and help them respond calmly and effectively during emergencies.
Principal Prof Stanzin Yangdol welcomed the NDRF team with traditional Khataks. Dr Mohd Taqi, Head of the Department of Geography, underlined the importance of disaster preparedness in Ladakh, given the region’s fragile high-altitude environment.
The practical demonstration was conducted by Sub-Inspector Puran Singh Negi along with members of the NDRF team. The team demonstrated simple rescue and safety measures and explained how people should act during an emergency, stressing the need for calmness, quick response and cooperation.
A large number of students, faculty members and non-teaching staff participated in the session. The interactive demonstrations gave participants an opportunity to understand how to respond to emergencies and assist others without putting themselves at further risk.
The college thanked the 13th Battalion NDRF and Mohammad Shafiq for conducting the session and providing practical guidance on disaster response.
The programme concluded with an emphasis on the importance of preparedness and awareness in building a safer and more resilient community in Ladakh.
