SHAM: District Police Sham organised drug awareness programmes at Likir and Biama as part of its ongoing campaign against drug abuse and substance addiction, focusing on educating students, youth and local communities about the dangers of narcotic substances and the collective responsibility of preventing their spread.

The awareness sessions were aimed at promoting a drug-free society by sensitising participants to the social, legal and health consequences of substance abuse while encouraging greater public cooperation with law enforcement agencies in tackling the menace.

At Likir, the programme was conducted by Sub-Inspector Skarma Angchuk, who spoke about the growing challenge posed by drug abuse and its impact on individuals, families and society. He urged participants to remain vigilant and extend active support to the police in efforts to curb the circulation and misuse of narcotic substances.

A similar programme was organised at Biama, where Inspector Tsewang Norboo, Station House Officer of Police Station Khaltsi, briefed participants on various forms of narcotic substances, the legal provisions governing offences under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and the wider social, economic and public health consequences arising from substance abuse. He underscored the role of community participation, parental supervision and timely reporting of drug-related activities in strengthening preventive efforts.

Both programmes witnessed participation from students, teachers, village representatives and members of the local community. The sessions also featured interactive discussions, during which participants raised questions on drug prevention, legal awareness and the role of citizens in supporting anti-drug initiatives. District Police Sham reiterated its commitment to sustaining awareness campaigns alongside preventive measures and strict enforcement of the law to address drug-related offences. It also appealed to the public to cooperate with the police by sharing information on drug trafficking and substance abuse to help safeguard communities from the growing threat of narcotics.
