KHALTSI: The District Civil and Police Administration, Sham, in collaboration with the Social Welfare Department and Health Department, observed the International Day of Older Persons with a special programme aimed at recognising the contributions of senior citizens and promoting their health, dignity and overall well-being.

Deputy Commissioner Sham Kunzas Angmo, SSP Sham Malik Aijaz and CMO Sham Dr Shamim Ahmad spoke on the occasion and highlighted the need for coordinated efforts by the administration, health institutions, families and the community to safeguard the welfare of senior citizens.

The programme underscored the invaluable role played by senior citizens in shaping families and society, while also highlighting the responsibility of the younger generation towards caring for and respecting the elderly.

Addressing the gathering, SSP Aijaz Malik noted that the United Nations observes the International Day of Older Persons to promote awareness about the rights, dignity, welfare and social inclusion of older people, besides recognising their lifelong contributions to society.

As part of the observance, senior citizens attending the programme were provided comprehensive health check-ups and personalised medical counselling. Awareness sessions and interactive lectures were also organised on issues concerning elderly care, healthcare, social support mechanisms and the importance of ensuring a secure and dignified life for senior citizens.

The speakers emphasised that the experience, knowledge and wisdom of older persons constitute an important social resource and called for greater sensitivity among younger generations towards their needs and concerns.

The programme concluded with an interactive session involving senior citizens and officials, during which participants reaffirmed their commitment to promoting the dignity, health, security and welfare of older persons across the district.
