LEH: Traffic Police Leh conducted a specialised road safety and traffic management awareness session for Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) personnel on Tuesday, focusing on safe driving practices, traffic regulations and the challenges of operating vehicles in Ladakh’s high-altitude mountainous terrain.
The session was organised at the invitation of DRDO and was conducted by DySP Traffic Leh Ms Kunzes Dolma, JKPS. The programme sought to familiarise DRDO personnel with traffic regulations and driving precautions relevant to Leh and its surrounding areas.
Addressing the participants, DySP Traffic Leh outlined traffic management practices followed in Leh town and neighbouring areas, while stressing the importance of road signs and markings for safe navigation.
The personnel were also briefed on mandatory vehicle documents and their legal requirements, as well as penalties and provisions under the Motor Vehicles Act applicable to common traffic violations.
Safe driving in mountainous terrain formed a major part of the session. Participants were advised on handling steep gradients and sharp curves and taking appropriate precautions while driving during adverse weather conditions and at high altitude, where terrain and environmental conditions can pose additional risks.
The interactive programme also allowed DRDO staff to raise queries concerning practical difficulties encountered while commuting in Ladakh. DySP Dolma responded to the concerns and emphasised that reducing road accidents and maintaining orderly traffic requires adherence to traffic regulations and responsible conduct by all road users.
Traffic Police Leh reiterated that road safety would continue to be pursued through public awareness, enforcement of traffic regulations and coordination with other agencies.
The department appealed to all road users, including defence and scientific personnel, to comply with traffic rules and adopt safe driving practices, particularly while negotiating Ladakh’s demanding mountain roads.
