KARGIL: Raising concern over the growing incidence of drug abuse among youth in Ladakh, the Police Station Wakha on Wednesday appealed for greater public cooperation in identifying drug-related activities during an awareness programme for students that also focused on women’s safety and community policing.
The programme, organised at the Police Station Wakha premises, brought together students, teachers and principals of Government High School Wakha and Model Middle School Wadoo as part of the district police’s outreach initiative to sensitise the younger generation on issues affecting society.
Addressing the gathering, Station House Officer (SHO) Inspector Rigzin Wangchuk said the increasing involvement of young people in drug consumption and peddling had emerged as a matter of concern in the region. He noted that the influx of tourists and migrant labourers during the summer months leads to a substantial increase in the local population, posing additional challenges for law enforcement agencies in monitoring unlawful activities.
The SHO appealed to members of the public to cooperate with the police by promptly reporting any suspected drug-related activities or individuals involved in the illegal trade of narcotic substances. He also highlighted the importance of ensuring women’s safety and encouraged greater public awareness on the issue.
Earlier, Sub-Inspector Tsering Nurboo cautioned students against the use of narcotic substances, explaining the physical, psychological and social consequences of drug addiction. He said substance abuse not only affects individual health but also disrupts families and communities, adding that those found involved in drug-related offences would face legal action under the law.
The principals of Government High School Wakha and Model Middle School Wadoo also addressed the participants and appreciated the initiative taken by District Police Kargil to engage students on issues of public safety and social responsibility.
As part of the programme, students were introduced to the day-to-day functioning of the police station, including the registration of complaints, investigation of criminal cases, maintenance of law and order and delivery of public services. The interaction was aimed at familiarising young people with policing processes and strengthening trust between the community and law enforcement agencies.
District Police Kargil said such awareness programmes would continue as part of its efforts to promote community policing, discourage substance abuse and encourage public participation in maintaining law and order.
