KARGIL: The 12th International Yoga Day was observed across Kargil district on Sunday, with hundreds of participants gathering at Khree Sultan Cho Sports Stadium for a mass yoga session led by the district administration under the national theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.”
The programme began with a live telecast of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address from West Bengal, following which participants joined a collective yoga session conducted by instructors from the Department of Youth Services and Sports.
Deputy Commissioner Kargil Rakesh Kumar attended the event as the chief guest and participated in the yoga exercises alongside public representatives, officials, schoolchildren and members of the public. Among those present were Councillor LAHDC Kargil Advocate Riyaz Ahmad Khan, Superintendent of Police Kargil Nitin Yadav, Additional Deputy Commissioner Ghulam Mohammad, former Chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council and BJP Ladakh Vice President Haji Anayat Ali, BJP Kargil President Assadullah Munshi and BJYM Kargil President Hassanain Rocky.
Addressing the media, the Deputy Commissioner said yoga offered benefits across age groups by contributing to both physical fitness and mental well-being. Referring to the Prime Minister’s message, he stressed that yoga should extend beyond an annual observance and become a regular part of daily life.
He announced that the district administration would organise periodic yoga sessions at various locations across Kargil with the support of trained instructors to encourage wider public participation and promote long-term wellness practices.
The event concluded with participants reaffirming their commitment to incorporating yoga into their daily routines and supporting initiatives aimed at fostering healthier and more balanced lifestyles.
The district-wide observance formed part of nationwide celebrations highlighting the role of yoga in preventive healthcare, fitness and mental resilience.
