SHEY: More than 10 youth volunteers associated with Support Wings collected and disposed of over 60 kg of waste during a cleanliness drive in Shey village, reinforcing efforts to promote environmental conservation, responsible waste management and community participation in maintaining public spaces.

The drive, organised on June 20, focused on cleaning public areas across the village, with volunteers removing plastic bottles, paper, food wrappers and other non-biodegradable waste. The collected waste was disposed of through appropriate waste management practices, according to the organisers.

The initiative was aimed at encouraging environmental stewardship among residents and visitors while highlighting the role of community participation in preserving the cleanliness of public spaces and promoting sustainable habits.

The campaign received appreciation from the local community, with the Goba (Village Head) of Shey acknowledging the efforts of the volunteers and commending Support Wings for undertaking the initiative. The organisers said the response reflected growing community support for youth-led environmental campaigns.

Speaking on the occasion, Rajlaxmi Banik, Assistant Director of Support Wings, said the organisation sought to encourage young people to become active participants in community development by taking responsibility for their surroundings. She said small, collective actions could contribute to cleaner, healthier and more sustainable communities.

Support Wings said the cleanliness drive forms part of its broader efforts to engage youth in volunteer-driven initiatives that promote environmental awareness, civic responsibility and sustainable community development across Ladakh.
