KARGIL: The Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan was launched in Kargil on Monday with Additional District Development Commissioner Ghulam Mohd, JKAS, flagging off an awareness campaign from the Deputy Commissioner’s Office and calling for wider community participation in efforts to combat substance abuse.
The flag-off was followed by an awareness march involving district officers, representatives of government departments, stakeholders, religious organisations and school students. The march proceeded from the Deputy Commissioner’s Office to Gandhi Park near Conference Hall, Baroo, before concluding at the starting point.
Addressing participants at the conclusion of the march, Imam Khomeini Memorial Trust representative Aga Syed Ali called for coordinated efforts by families, educational institutions, religious organisations, the administration and the wider community to protect young people from substance abuse.
He also stressed the need to encourage healthy and responsible lifestyles among young people and linked prevention efforts with moral and religious values.
SHO Kargil Kacho Saadat Ali outlined the social, physical and legal consequences of drug use, urging young people to avoid substance abuse driven by peer pressure, fashion or attempts to project a particular image.
He also appealed to residents to share information with the Police about suspected drug-related activities in their surroundings, saying timely information could help check the spread of substance abuse.
Manager/In-charge, District De-Addiction Centre Kargil, Imtiyaz Hussain, briefed participants about the month-long campaign and the awareness and outreach activities planned as part of the initiative.
He called upon government departments, institutions, community organisations and residents to actively participate in the campaign and contribute to efforts aimed at creating a drug-free Kargil.
The campaign is aimed at raising public awareness about the adverse effects of substance abuse and strengthening community participation in prevention and awareness efforts.
